be happy

winter feels like it has been here for FOREVER this year! we had long discussed dreams to return to Maui this spring. due to many factors, we have to hold off on this. making all of us sad to have to wait longer. i have not scrapbooked many of the photos from that last trip. lately i've been printing off more of the photos.

this is one from one of the first days of our holiday. neither of the kids knew anything about ocean waves. it was on this walk that they were completely shocked at how unpredictable the waves were. at first the kids were reserved and kept to the dry areas. after all we were all wearing clothes and not dressed for swimming! then they had fun chasing the waves. until the waves started "chasing" them!! Aidan nearly lost one of his shoes and was distressed over that experience for awhile. Kiara just wasn't entirely sure. she would stand facing the ocean when the waves approached, hold out her hands and command the water to stop. it was distressing to her when the waves did not listen. they both did become comfortable with the waves as we spent time in them. this photo with Aidan splashing in the edge of the waves and Kiara trying to "talk" to the waves reminded me of those first interactions with the ocean. we laugh about it now, but there were so many happy memories we all shared together.

which is why we all want to return and gather more memories. that....and the hot sun....sand....palm trees....

this is my design using the monthly kit at Urban Scrapbook. the teals and yellows are beautiful in this paper. so nice to see colour like this at this dull time of winter!

i cut my background paper down to about 11 inches. framed it with black cardstock, then some more patterned paper. it had been awhile since i used my sewing machine...so it got used to add more detail to the frames.

using my Cameo i cut out some roses from the patterned yellow paper and the yellow cardstock:

using the software, i used the knife tool to cut the frame. i only wanted to use the roses and part of the frame.

i also used my vagabond and this die on the newsprint patterned paper:

the larger roses are part of the kit, but the small rosebuds (I Am Roses) are from my own stash. the gems are a few from Studio Calico that i added at the end. the pin is actually a plastic design from Prima. they are plain, but totally easy to dress up. i embossed with black, then sanded it off to create contrast. i finished it with some glitter embossing powder. the bird was painted with white acrylic paint, then inked with Iced Spruce (blue-grey ink). i pulled off some threads from the ribbons, tied some bows and added them in.

the letters are included in the kit. i turned the "d" into a "p". i painted this bird with aqua acrylic paint, then sanded it when dry. i used some brown inks to tone down the blue.

there were some cute file folder die cuts. they came in handy to add some hidden journaling. as well as the date attached to my photo.

it is really difficult to see....but i added more aqua acrylic paint to the black photo mat. i used my finger to run the paint along the edge. i used my EK Success edge punch (scalloped scallop punch) to create the edge on the white cardstock.

as i say every month....it is amazing how all of the designers were given the same kits and our pages are so unique. everyone used some different techniques on their layouts and achieved amazing results. lots of variety and inspiration! check them out at Urban Scrapbook.
